In the last days of a tutor...

So, since I'll be starting work full-time
here in the next couple of weeks,
yesterday was my last day tutoring
my 7th grade girl, "N."
I have really loved working with "N."
She's so great.
We had fun yesterday working on
her probability homework,
and then after we were done,
we laughed and worked on a puzzle together.
Then, I had to break the news to her
that it would be my last day tutoring her.
"Really?!" - She looked so sad.
Broke my heart a little.
It was becoming clear to me how much
I was actually helping her.
(The place I tutor at is actually
a treatment center for struggling families,
so not only does this young girl struggle
in school, but she has a somewhat tough
family life as well.)
Anyways, I told her I had a little present
for her, so I grabbed out of my purse a bag
of tootsie roll suckers and a little note that wished
her good luck with the rest of the school year
and told her how much I fun I had being her tutor.
She read the note and looked at me and said,
"Can I give you a hug?"
Of course!
So, as we were walking back upstairs to her mom,
she gave me a hug and then told her mom
(who doesn't speak English very well)
how it was my last day. Then, her mom came
over and grabbed my hand and thanked me
over and over again.
I felt so great.
I felt that I had actually made a difference.
Next week there is no tutoring because of
the kids' spring break,
but the 19th will be my last day tutoring
"A" - I am so sad! She's a little 3rd grader
and is so darling!
I have really loved tutoring.
I really hope to do it again next school year.
It's so great.
:)
